Church of Matriz de São Jorge (Vila do Nordeste)

It is a Portuguese Christian monument located in Nordeste municipality, in the island of São Miguel. The early church, under the invocation of São Jorge (Saint Jorge), already existed before 1522, on the occasion of the cataclysm that subverted Vila Franca do Campo. In 1796, the reconstruction of the new temple began, which lasts until this day.

Our Lady of Pranto hermitage (São Pedro Nordestinho)

This marian temple under the invocation Nossa Senhora do Pranto (Our Lady of Pranto) was erected in 1522.
It’s origin lays on the story of a cattle keeper who saw Our Lady and instructed him to, among other things, build this hermitage. Nowadays it is a place where the various pilgrimages of the island stop by.

This temple is the greatest architectural heritage of this place. The small and simple temple under the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Anunciação dates back to 1526 and suffered several refurbishments over the years, being the last one in 1984. From the church's square you have a great view to the sea, which made it even more popular.

This viewpoint is well known for being one of the best spots in the island to see the sunrise. For this reason, some people stay there overnight. Besides watching the sunrise, this place also offers an astonishing view to the sea and to Serra da Tronqueira.

Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint (Pedreira)

A few metters after Ponta da Madrugada viewpoint, Ponta do Sossego offers a dazzling view over the shore, Fajã do Araújo and Lombo Gordo beach.
Besides that, it holds the biggest garden of the municipality, which contains several different flowers and plants, and also a BBQ area, making this place very appealing for family summer picnics.

Pico de Bartolomeu Viewpoint (Pedreira)

Pico de Bartolomeu (Bartholomew’s Peak) offers an amazing view through the east coast of the island, covering both Nordeste and Povoação. Here you can find Azorean Laurissilva, an endemic specie of the Azores which can be found at high altitudes. Priolo, an endemic specie of the Azores, can also be easily found from this viewpoint, especially during the summer.

Serra da Tronqueira Viewpoint (Pedreira)

This viewpoint offers a terrific view over Serra da Tronqueira (Tronqueira mountain) and Pico da Vara (Vara’s peak), the higher peak of São Miguel island, with 1103 metters, and also over Pico Verde (Green peak), with 931 metters.
Here you can find a great variety of endemic plant species such as Azorean Laurissilva, Azores juniper, Azores Blueberry, Azores Laurel and Azorean Holly. Besides that, and since this viewpoint is situated inside the Priolo’s habitat, you can watch it from here during certain periods of the year.

From this viewpoint you can see Farol do Arnel (Arnel’s Lighthouse) – the oldest lighthouse of the Azores – and the fishing port of Vila do Nordeste. It is possible to go down there, but be careful because it is very steep.

Pelado Endemic Park Viewpoint (Lomba da Fazenda)

This viewpoint is inserted inside Pelado Endemic Park, hence its name. The low height of the coast in this area offers a greater proximity to the sea, and for this reason the soil here became very arid, which allowed the growth of a kind of vegetation in the island, such as Faia-da-Terra, Bracel-da-rocha and Urze.

This place was a whale watching tower, dating back from when one of Azores main economic activities was whale hunting.
One of the singularities of this viewpoint is its astonishing view over the sea and the north coast. In this viewpoint you can also see a whale watching tower and also an homage to Nossa Senhora de Fátima (Our Lady of Fátima). It has BBQ and picnic area, toilets and a circuit of physical maintenance.

Priolo Environmental Centre is located inside Recreio da Cancela do Cinzeiro Forest Reserve. The main goal of this centre is to promote the Priolo, endemic bird of São Miguel, in order to preserve its natural habital, the Laurissilva florest. Botanical Garden Ribeira do Guilherme (Lomba da Fazenda)

This botanical garden, located in the slopes of Serra da Tronqueira, occupies part of the watercourse of Ribeira do Guilherme, where Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park is situated. Along the watercourse, you will find waterfalls whose water feeds old mills and lakes where swans swim. In the end of this course, a place named Boca da Ribeira (Stream’s mouth), was used to make a camping park and, near the sea, a natural pool.
